How to Design a Home Office

A dedicated office area in your home helps you concentrate on work and put aside household distractions. Whether you prefer a colorful, inspiring space or a peaceful retreat, we’re offering tips for creating a home office that supports and gives you exactly what you need right now!

Tip #1: Prioritize Quality Seating

An office chair should not be like any dining or side chair. You can be sitting on it for hours at a time, so it’s important to have a comfortable chair for long-term neck and back health. A great chair will also be adjustable to accommodate your preferences.

Tip #2: Select a Comfortable and Functional Surface

It’s important to have a proper work surface. Does the mouse slide across easily? Is it at proper height for your comfort? Ideally, elbows should be at a 90-degree angle when your hands are in front of your keyboard or laptop.

Tip #3: Have Readily Available Storage & Filing Options

Studies have shown that a clutter-free environment impacts peace of mind and focus. Different storage options offer different solutions. Tuck away paperwork and tools in filing cabinets and credenzas. Display your favorite books in bookcases and etageres.

Tip #4: Functional Lighting that Serves You

Studies show that people who work in natural light are more productive, sleep better at night and have fewer eye problems. A variety of lighting – task, overhead, and natural – is best.

Tip #5: Add Elements that Absorb Sound

Avoid echo-filled video calls and inspire comfort with elements that absorb sound. A rug, soft chair, pillows, drapery, and even plants will do the trick!

Tip #6: Backdrop for Video Calls

Tip #7: Invite In Things You Love

Complete your home office with things that make you smile and provide inspiration. Family photos, art, and figurines personalize your work space. Add desktop accessories like a pen cup holder and letter organizer to add a sense of refinement, while keeping organized.
